While Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (hospital coverage) and Medicare Part B (medical coverage), Original Medicare may not offer all the coverage you want from your healthcare plan.
Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, aims to help people get coverage that meets their personal healthcare needs.
Medicare Advantage plans include Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B, but may also offer coverage that Original Medicare does not.
Learn More At MedicareInsurance.comDepending upon the current enrollment period, you may be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if you’re already on Medicare and any of the following apply:
People who are newly eligible for Medicare, typically turning 65 or qualifying due to a disability.
This period is a 7-month window, starting 3 months before your 65th birthday, including the month of your birthday, and extending 3 months after.
During the IEP, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time. You must already be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage plan.
People who are already on Original Medicare and want to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, or people who already have a Medicare Advantage plan but would like to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan. AEP also applies to joining or switching a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug plan.
AEP takes place from October 15 to December 7 of each year.
During AEP, one can switch from an Original Medicare plan to a Medicare Advantage plan or vice versa. Additionally, one can switch from their current Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan without the need for a qualifying life event.
One can also switch from one Medicare Part D (prescription drug plan) to another, join a Medicare Part D plan for the first time, or drop a Medicare Part D plan. Essentially, AEP is the best time of year to update your Medicare plan if you are not satisfied with your current coverage.
People who are interested in switching a Medicare Advantage plan and have recently experienced a qualifying life event. This may include but is not limited to: moving, losing your existing coverage, being diagnosed with a qualifying chronic illness, or the availability of a 5-star Medicare Advantage plan in your area.
Special Enrollment Periods are triggered by certain qualifying life events — because of this, SEP windows can vary. Typically, you have 6 months to join or switch a Medicare Advantage plan after a qualifying life event.
If you experience a life event that qualifies as an SEP trigger, such as moving, losing your existing coverage, being diagnosed with a qualifying chronic illness, or the availability of a 5-star Medicare Advantage plan in your area, you will be able to switch from an existing Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan that may be a better fit for your healthcare needs and lifestyle.
